Sketchbook Revival started this week and I’m pumped. It took me a hot minute to figure out that there are no *new* classes this year rather access to all the years past. Either way I’ve been watching videos and busting out all my journals. Even my Dolly Parton Cake Box Junk Journal got some new additions. One of the best parts about SBR are all the freebies the instructors offer. You could spend your entire summer going through the plethora of free classes and downloads being given away. I am super excited about the free goodies from
, Sarah Mathews, Helen Wells and . Don’t forget Making Zen is happening this week too and is also free for a limited time. Plus I’ve dusted off a vintage roladex in preparation for CAD from
It’s a thin line between hoarder and collector - I think the only difference is the way you display and store things. The NY Times recently profiled Clayton Patterson and I totally understand his collection obsession (you should see the stacks of zines, 90’s band posters, ticket stubs and photos I have). For the record I went to the Uncommon Flea Market last weekend and put almost everything away. Gold star for me. This pearl of wisdom was in the Art Journal Hero newsletter from fellow craft supply hoarder and art/junk journaler Marenthe today: “Here’s the secret: collect everything, everywhere. Vintage lace, postcards of old cars, portraits, 1920s textiles, ribbons from yesteryear, beads, buttons, church maps, old sheet music, illustrated books—if it catches your eye, grab it. The trick? Organize it like your life depends on it. My process may be chaotic, but my materials are a temple of order.” I found her wonderful work via

Game of Shrooms - I’m not talking about The Last of Us on HBO I’m talking about the global art hide and seek with a mushroom theme. The actual event starts in a few weeks but it’s never too early to start planning your project and getting added to the map. Maybe I’ll go hide some of these gnomes and toadstools I made from plastic Easter eggs. I bet Jennifer Buchheit Author of The Big Book of Fantasy Kids Crafts has some shroomtastic projects you could make too.
Seen any good movies lately? I rarely watch subtitled movies for a couple of reasons: 1) I dated a film major throughout college so I’ve seen more obscure films and read more subtitles than most. 2) I’m usually crafting while watching and I can’t do that with subtitles. I made an exception last week and rewatched Jean-Luc Godard’s Le Mepris. Damn the cinematography is breathtaking and the weird blues in the statue shots had me itching to paint. I also watched The Substance which kept making me ask aloud is this a David Cronenberg movie (no but apparently influenced by). After reading the latest Red Hand Files I want to watch Wake In Fright, but can only find the remake.
A friend was texting me pictures of letters I had sent her years ago full of doo dads, stickers, photos and hand lettering. It reminded how bad I want a copy of Syme's Letter Writer: A Guide to Modern Correspondence About (Almost) Every Imaginable Subject of Daily Life, with Odes to Desktop Ephemera and Selected Letters of Famous Writers. Makes me want a pen pal too. I participated in a postcard swap once and it was tons of fun. Summer seems like the time for a pen pal. Also, tangent for old music lovers like me: the ink well on the book cover made me want to go listen to Yank Crime by Drive Like Jehu.
Did you read The Glue Gun Gazette 4/22/25, watch my interview with Jo Gick or check to see if I am teaching a workshop near you?
