Interviews With 10 Inspiring Substackers
I've interviewed lot's of people in my day from punk bands to podcasters here are a few that just also happen to have a Substack.
Picking the brain of fellow creatives is one of my favorite things. I get as excited about a good brain storming session with artists, crafters and small business owners as I do discovering a new gem of a thrift store - and that is saying something.
My goal is to share an interview of some sort each week. Maybe even some ‘Ask Me Anything’ video chats where you guys can interview me!
In the meantime I’ve started this series here on Substack last week’s interview with Katherine Wallis of Hot Dang Press kicked things off. There was also an old interview I did with Stephen Brown of Glitterville I reposted.
This week I thought I would point out some older interviews I have done with fellow Substackers. Sure some are almost 20 years old, but lessons on creativity don’t age.
Becky Helms - Designer, Creator and Podcaster
When I interviewed
for my podcast Creative Queso she was hot and heavy into the enamel pin game with her then business The Pink Samurai. Now she still loves pins but her new moniker here on Substack is My Artist Friend. There is a companion podcast too! Becky is a creative delight and as I mentioned if like me you love reading interviews with fellow artsy craftsy folks her Substack and podcast are great ones to bookmark.Miranda July - Author, Film Maker and Artist
This interview is OLD, like from the days when I ran a jewelry company and blog called Naughty Secretary Club. Just because we chatted almost 18 years ago (I told you I’ve been doing this a long time) there are still some fun tidbits. I learned about
during her performance art days and when she was directing videos for Sleater Kinney. She has gone on to be even more multi-faceted and even more interesting and I didn’t think that was possible. I am dying to read her latest book All Fours. I saw that it is the pick this month for the book club.Kristin Tweedale - Feminist Scrapbooker and Podcaster
I’ve mentioned
a few times since starting this Substack (here and here). It’s always nice to see a familiar face in a new landscape so I was glad to find her and her substack Your Story Matters and her podcast Crafty Ass Female. You can even listen to my interview on her podcast here. With over 200 episodes Kristin seemed like the perfect person to interview for the Creative Queso Podcast on the episode all about podcasting.Gabrielle Blair - Alt Summit and Design Mom
Packing your bags to head out to Palm Springs for Alt Summit? Might I suggest checking out my Creative Queso Podcast interview with founder
. This is a picture of us at Mom 2.0 when the event was in Austin several years ago. Listen in to hear us chat about Design Mom, Alt Summit, Joanna Gaines and more. P.S. check out the book Gabrielle and her husband Ben wrote about parenting (they have 6 kids so they are pros) called The Kids are Alright.Ann Shen - Author and Illustrator
Here on Substack you can find
writing on her page The Tea Salon. Every home should have a copy of her books: Bad Girls Throughout History, Legendary Ladies, Revolutionary Women and Nevertheless, She Wore It. I love the illustrations and the fascinating information. During our Creative Queso Podcast interview we chat everything from crystals and manifesting to working for Disney.Travis Nichols - Author and Artist
is probably more well known for his comics and illustrations these days but I know him back from he called Austin, TX home and made quirky door hangers. I interviewed Travis years ago about his book Punk Rock Etiquette. Here is a little review I did of his Monster Doodle Book. Be sure to check out his page and get caught up on his Substack comic Cassidy: Biggest Monster, Smallest Planet.Gala Darling - Author, Speaker and Tapping Expert
I think the first time I ever heard of tapping was from
. I’ve been a fan since her days at Rock n’ Roll Bride. Gala is like Tony Robbins and Mel Robbins with pink hair and an Australian accent. Check out her website, You Tube channel, all her books and of course the interview I did with her for Creative Queso.Stacey Martin - Tattoo Artist, Business Owner and Illustrator
6 of my tattoos are from Stacey Martin but not only does she totally get my wacky tattoo visions and was responsible for the amazing glue gun coloring sheet you received when you signed up for my newsletter she is also a savvy business owner. As a matter of fact Albany, NY she just opened a new studio called Sweet Nuthins! Don’t live close? No problem, you can order one of her prints from Paper Panther Press. I recommend either the Makers Gonna Make or Sewing and Quilting Tattoo Flash. Check out our chat on my Creative Queso podcast.
Jenipher Lyn - Artist and Mental Health Advocate
I chatted with
for the Creative Queso segment called Taco Tuesday. In the interview we chat about her book Find Your Rainbow, her podcast The Rainy Day Diaries and more fun things like her love of cookies and 9 year old jewelry making side hustles.Jennifer Sodini - Artist, Writer and Speaker
My first and only set of oracle cards came from
who I see is also on Substack. In our Creative Queso chat we talk about her Amenti Oracle set and how creatives can use the deck for inspiration and as a remedy for creative block. I for one LOVE the illustrations by Natalee Miller and can’t wait to get their upcoming deck Be Not Afraid.Who next?
I’ve got interviews lined up with paint by number creators, a marketing wizard for women and a fairy house maker. Who would you love to read/watch/listen to an interview with? Leave me a comment and I’ll see what I can do!
Ahhh thank you so much for including me in this amazing list! It's been so fun getting on Substack and I'm so happy to be connected here.
Lady!! You are inspiration and I’m honored to be in this list of badass creatives! So stoked for more of your interviews!!
