I like my artsy/craftsy information in small bite sized chunks. This is the black and white edition, because who does not love a good theme.
Old school punkers and middle aged indie rockers in the LA area rejoice. The Getty just acquired the archive of artist Raymond Pettibon. He is probably best known for the Sonic Youth album Goo cover art. I have a T-shirt with an Urban Cowboy parody and I also loved the Breonna Taylor and Isaiah Lewis version by Look I Drew You. The image is well ensconced in the cultural landscape. Music wise he has also worked with Black Flag and The Minutemen. According to the website the collection will not only have Pettibon’s art but also linocuts, zines, concert flyers, skateboard decks and more. P.S. Speaking of Sonic Youth did you see that
and are now both on Substack?
Black and White is a Neutral is available over in my Jennifer Perkins Art Etsy shop. It’s an extreme variation of gluing stuff to stuff with a collage thrown in for good measure. Want to make your own versions? Don’t forget if you are at Craftcation in Ventura, Ca I will be hosting a Sip and Stick Yearbook Collage Session on Thursday (4/24) from 6:30-8:30. Also, on Saturday at Brooklyn Charm, the store is in Ventura - don’t let the name fool you - I will be hosting a Glue Stuff to Stuff Experience where you can create your own kitsch covered shadow box diorama. Heck paint a black and white weirdo with me Sunday (4/27) at These Hands Maker Collective in Los Angeles too!
As a card carrying member of the adult ADHD club I love me a good deep dive and tangents. Recently while driving with my son we heard “Hey Mickey” by Toni Basil. This reminded me that before she sang she danced and how much I loved this scene with her in The Monkees movie Head. This is kind of an underrated movie (with tons of cameos) as far as I’m concerned. Actually The Monkees are kind of an underrated band and fellow musical tangent lover
agrees.
Have you been to the American Museum of Natural History Museum? They have a wonderful butterfly vivarium and right now you can adopt a butterfly including one of these gorgeous Zebra Longwinged Butterflies. Feeling inspired now? Check out these creative winged projects: Vintage fabric moths from Mister Finch Textiles, gorgeous illustrations by French entomologist Eugène Séguy (via Miss Moss), chainstitch tiger moth from Die Trying and lot’s of winged wonders from
over at Paper Panther Press. Be sure to check out my podcast interview with tattoo artist Stacy Martin Smith too.
My two favorite things to watch on TV are: Drag Race and smutty dating reality shows. When Trixie and Katya reviewed Temptation Island it was like when chocolate joined peanut butter for me. Anyway, almost more than the actual dialogue I love the Piet Mondrain themed set. Black, white and primary colors are always a yes for me. If you love these colors too tune into Vickie Howell’s Stitchwell Social Club April 30th live bonus episode with me! The theme is Primary Play and I’ll be there at 11am CST making some colorful wood beaded jewelry with viewers. Want to hear my podcast interview with Vickie Howell?
I mentioned these earrings in the April newsletter, but they are worth a second mention because they are that cute and fit the black and white theme perfectly. These adorable Perler Bead Jewelry Kits are from Aaliyah Taylor who according to Craft Industry Alliance won the inaugural Minority Creative Grant from JOANN. Talk about primary play!
